Leaving comments on forums and other blogs in your niche is a brilliant way to start driving traffic to your own blog because blogs are designed so that when you leave a comment, the name you leave is linked to the URL you leave. When other people read the comments and find them interesting they click through to your link.
What is good about this method is that it is completely under your control. You decide how much or how little time you want to devote to it. However, I would say this is a fairly short-medium term traffic strategy as this doesn’t bring in hordes of traffic; it is more of a ‘one-subscriber-at-a-time’ strategy and once your blogs gains traction, your time will be better spent elsewhere.
Does Blog Commenting Work?
Oh yes it does! It is the way in which I launch all of my blogs and get my first few hundred subscribers or potential costumers.
What is the Purpose of Commenting?
We know that the overall goal is to get traffic but what specific goals do we need to think about in the commenting in order to get that traffic?
We want to get the attention of the readers and we want to create our own brand.
There are other benefits too. If you can grab the attention of the blogger this is a good way to begin to develop a relationship with them which will help you later on. Also, a small number of blogs use a plugin to turn their comments into real links (they are usually no-follow) which can help you get some backlinks too.
Gaining the Attention of the Readers
The primary goal is to get the attention of the other readers and encourage them to click through to your own blog. There are three critical factors at play here:
1) The quality of the comment. Saying “great post!” or something similar will not get you any clicks!
2) Being an early commenter – not many people read the 50th or 100th comment
3) The age of the post – activity is usually highest on new posts
As with everything to do with blogging, you must leave valuable comments. Simply agreeing with the blogger doesn’t really add anything to the conversation. If they’ve written a list of ideas, see if you can add an extra one. If it is an opinion post, maybe you can offer a different opinion.
Don’t be afraid to disagree with the blogger! In fact this can be a great strategy because readers like a bit of a stir and that can get people clicking your link to find out who this person in who is creating controversy! However, always make sure that you are polite – never be rude!
Gaining the Attention of the Blogger
Note that if blogs are being read in an RSS reader, these only show the posts and not the comments so most blog readers will never even see your comments. Those that do will probably only see a handful but there is one person who will probably see all of them – the blogger.
Most bloggers read all comments and so when you start to comment regularly at a particular blog they notice it. They’ll also notice if you don’t behave yourself!
All in all, blog commenting can be a very profitable long-term practice if you do it right. Follow the rules, be interesting and you’ll be making money and funneling visitors in no time.
