Duplicate Content – The Search Ranking Killer, We Run Through The Main Causes And How To Fix This Problem.

by admin on November 27, 2011

In the world of SEO Services, there are few things that can be as destructive to the rankings of a website as duplicate content, In this article I will explain how duplicate content comes about and the best ways to address each of the causes. The reason that duplicate content is so detrimental to your websites rankings is simple, Google values original content over all things, it has no interest in ranking two pages with the same content highly, otherwise in theory, the first page of results for any particular keyword could contain ten listings for the same content.

The first way that duplicate content can occur is scraping, this means either someone else has copied and pasted the content from your page, or your page was made using content that was copied from another web page. This is usually the most detrimental form of duplicate content for a websites rankings. To establish if the content on any of your pages is duplicated on other domains across the internet you can use tools such as copyscape and plagium, you can also try pasting sections of your text directly into google and see what is returned. If you identify any other copies of your content on the internet you should initially contact the owner of the offending web site and ask them to remove your content, if this does not work you could contemplate filing an infringement notice with google and yahoo for breech of the digital millenium copyrights act. You may even contemplate rewriting the content on your own site to make it original.

There are a few ways you can deter people from scraping your content in the first place, probably the best I have come across is a web service called Tynt. Tynt uses a small morsel of javascript code that inserts an attribution link pointing to your website every time right click and copy is used on your web content. When there is an attribution link present in duplicate content it helps google to accurately attribute the original source of the content. Another method of detering copy scraping is the use of copyscape content protection banners which warn would-be content theives that you are actively guarding the copyright of the materials on that page.

Other ways by which duplicate content can come about is flawed server configuration. Your server should always be configured via htaccess (if apache) to redirect either from non-www. to www or vice versa, it should not allow the same page to be viewed on both urls. Another predicament can be pages which display simular content within your site on different urls, this last issue is a dilemma that is very widespread in ecommerce stores, and to correct the issue, you should specify your preffered verison of the content using the link rel=canonical tag, for more information on the canonical tag simply google the phrase. ofcourse if you do identify that your site has a problem, but dont have the experience or time to put it right yourself you could always seek the assistance of a professional SEO Services provider.

Find out vital recommendations about one way links – read the site. The time has come when proper info is truly at your fingertips, use this chance.
