If their money is made from new signups or referrals then the company is a pyramid scheme and will not last long, but if the company makes its money from either selling products or collects income from advertisers then the company is probably legit with a healthy stream of income.
Personally I have made the majority of my money through marketing networks. The way these work is advertisers either pay for traffic, surveys, views, clicks, or whatever and I provide the people to complete the tasks. A couple of the websites which I work for are hits4pay and cash crate both of which have paid. Before signing up for these two I researched the company and had a good understanding of where the income was based. Neither of these companies earn their money from people signing up for work, but rather from advertisers who would like either their ads looked at or surveys taken. Another company that fits the bill is my lot which is a website which pays its users for content creation. They are another company which has income generated from advertisers and since the internet is built on content creation they are able to pay their users a small percentage of what they make from the traffic generated from the content that is created from their users. Anyway these are just a few of hundreds so make sure to look around before you decide on one.
