Marketing With Twitter: Why You Can Not Afford To Ignore Twitter!

There is much spoken and written about Twitter these days. According to statistics published in late 2009, almost 19% of all internet users have a Twitter account. Twitter still, however, is mis-understood or simply not understood at all by a fair chunk of the population. Is it a geeks’ toy, a time sucker or something students waste study hours messing about on? In this article we are going to explore why Twitter is much more than any of those things and why, if you have any sort of business, you should be excited about it.

Twitter falls into the category of a ‘Micro-Blogging Engine’. We are all familiar with blogs – a type of website designed to be dynamic and easily update-able. Twitter reduced this formula down to 140 characters. So imagine you had a blog but you had to condense each post to one sentence or two short sentences (this sentence is actually 141 characters). That’s what Twitter does. This makes it a very fast-moving and immediate form of communication.

In the early days of Twitter, the box where you would type your post (or Tweet as they are called) asked ‘What are you doing?’ This meant that people would write the most mundane and dull things in there…’I am eating a ham sandwich’ or ‘I just blew my nose’ These days Twitter has changed the question to ‘What’s happening?’ this alone has changed the way in which people are using Twitter. Now they are giving people an update rather than sharing banalities.

For the businessman, this represents a remarkable opportunity. An opportunity to connect with loyal customers and potential customers and update or promote your business in real time, and driving increased traffic to your website or customers to your store.

Done properly, a Twitter campaign can have a massive effect on customers and sales whether your business is online or offline. However “done properly “ are the key words in that last sentence. Like any other new marketing medium, there are some subtleties that need to be recognised and observed to generate a successful campaign but if they are, you will find Twitter to be an invaluable addition to your marketing arsenal. If you do it all wrong, however, you could find that not only will you waste loads of valuable time, but the results of your efforts will be disappointing. The key to getting the most out of this new medium for broadcasting your business is to learn how to do it right and learn how to do it without spending hours and hours.

To get better acquainted with what Twitter can do for you and how you can use it without spending hours and hours you don’t have or cant afford, you need to get hold of a copy of a free report called ‘Twitter Me This’.

I have the same problem with Twitter that I do with Facebook though. That is, you do not own your list. I hate to spend too much time building up a following on a social media site when they can take it all away with the blink of an eye.

I feel that if the products and services you’re offering are good, and your customers become raving fans, then you’ll benefit from social buzz regardless if you have an account on Twitter/Facebook or not.
